When I’m not filming, I’m writing. So I was happy when the Homeless Children’s Playtime Project asked if I would write, produce, direct, and shoot a fund-raising piece. Pro bono, of course. How could I say no? In Washington, DC we have DC General, which was a hospital until 2000, and now it’s used as a shelter for families. There’s over 500 kids there, but no outdoor place to play. So the Project needed a fund-raising video. Now, sometimes this type of video runs 8-10 minutes, and has wall-to-wall experts talking about the benefits of play, but we never hear from a single child. I wanted to do it differently — a much shorter piece, under 2 minutes, with only children.
